What is One-on one Counselling?
Counselling Services
At Norris Counselling I offer affordable, mental health care to anyone in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer or questioning community I am very sensitive to LGBTQ+ and HIV issues.
If something is upsetting or troubling you it can be worth spending some time talking and thinking about why this may be happening to you with a qualified LGBTQ+ counsellor. Our LGBTQ+ counselling service helps LGBTQ+ individuals talk to an LGBTQ+ counsellor professional in a setting where they feel accepted and affirmed for who they are. We help gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans people to increase their self-acceptance and feel more able to manage challenging situations in their lives
Norris Counselling offers a safe space where members and allies of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender and queer/questioning community can join together in a network of support and acceptance. Our mental health program focuses on empowerment, inclusion, and holistic wellness.
I exist so that every member of the local LGBTQ+ community has the resources needed to thrive and live meaningful lives. Our counsellors are specially prepared to work with the specific challenges that the LGBT community faces.
If you are a member of the LGBTQ+ community including individuals, couples, families, or allies; welcome to our safe space.
Coming to terms with your sexuality and facing homophobic attitudes can have lasting effects in your mental health. In addition, the discrimination and stigma LGBTQ+ individuals often face can be a serious impediment to their well-being. Some LGBTQ+ individuals suffer rejection from their families or friends and, together, these experiences have the potential to cause significant psychological and emotional distress.
Though many counsellors may be qualified to help, sometimes LGBTQ+ individuals feel more comfortable with a gay, lesbian or bisexual therapist, or at least with a therapist who has a great deal of experience with LGBTQ+ issues. At LGBTQ+ Counselling Services, we understand the challenges of being lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LBGTQ+), and we offer a safe and non-judgemental environment in which you can explore these issues.
Benefits of Counselling for LGBTQ+ Issues
Counselling therapy can be enormously beneficial if you are facing emotional stress related to your gender identity or sexuality. Therapists at LGBT Counselling Services have experience in working with LGBT issues and can support you on your journey to self-improvement.
Talking with someone who is trained to listen and support can help you to understand more about what you are experiencing. They will support you with systems to cope with and challenge the problems you may be facing, with the aim of helping you live an authentic, full and happy life. It is important that during therapy the environment you choose to work in is private and comfortable for you. This helps to ensure our work together remains confidential and safe for you
How do sessions work?
How do sessions work?
Sessions take place in a calm and safe environment, in person in Melbourne CBD. Sessions last for up to 50 minutes and they are usually at the same time each time, on a weekly or fortnightly basis.
The first session will involve an assessment of your circumstances and a review is usually completed half way through your sessions.
It is important that clients decide what to talk about in sessions and set the agenda. I will help you to reflect on your experiences, thoughts and feelings to support you to identify ways of managing and changing the things that are important to you.
When do sessions take place?
To make accessing our counselling services as easy as possible I offer appointments 2 days per week after hours between 5pm and 9:30pm including some Saturdays too. Your preferred day and method of counselling will be accommodated wherever possible, although the more flexibility you have the sooner you are likely to be seen.
What if I need additional support?
Sometimes, it becomes apparent that clients might benefit from using other services I will discuss any need for you to be referred on to other organisations to meet some of their needs. We can offer support to clients in accessing other services, as required.
